Traffic Today: Effective Use of Pay-Per-Click
Advertising
by: Kevin A.

While I'm an avid proponent of
Search Engine Optimization, or Search Engine
Marketing as it's sometimes called, it does take
some time and effort before seeing sizeable results.
So what is a new website to do? How can you get
exposure right away?
While there are some clever marketing strategies
like viral marketing or developing joint venture
partners, one sure way to bring visitors to your
site is with a
Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Advertising Campaign. I have
driven traffic to a newly launched website in less
than 20 minutes time!
Pay-Per-Click is simply a type of paid advertising
that is available through several search engines.
Two of the most well known PPC programs are Google's
Adwords program and Yahoo! Search Marketing and
MSN's Ad Center.
Basically, you bid on a "per-click" basis. This
means your company will pay the bid amount you've
set every time someone clicks on your ad and visits
your site.
There are many things you can do to improve your
pay-per-click advertising effectiveness. Spend some
time doing your
Keyword Research and writing out great ads.
It's very important that you bid on keywords that
are most likely to bring the type of visitor you
want. If you're giving something away for free to
build a list then by all means, include the word
free in some of your keyword phrases.
If, however, you're only going for a sale, try to
use keywords with some "intention" to them. An
example of this would be adding the words "buy" or
"purchase" to your keyword phrase as it's likely the
searcher is ready to buy the product they're
searching for.
Make sure you bid enough to get into the top five ad
positions on the first page of the results for the
keywords you're bidding on. Ads in those positions
will get a much better Click-through-rate (CTR) than
those lower down and way more than those found on
subsequent pages.
As with all paid advertising, it's wise to keep a
close eye on your campaigns as often as possible. If
you understand the process and monitor your
pay-per-click campaign frequently, it can be
extremely effective.
One way to track your effectiveness is to do a
simple calculation. Determine your site's profit for
the month and divide that figure by the number of
monthly visitors.
If your site made $1,000 in profit for the month and
had 1,000 visitors in the same time frame, you could
conclude that on average, each visitor has a value
of about $1.00. If you're paying less than a
dollar-per-click you are making money on your PPC
campaign and if you’re paying more than a
dollar-per-click you are losing money.
Everyone wants to make money, but I'm happy if my
PPC is at the break-even point because I'm capturing
the information of many of my visitors with the
intention of building a relationship with them.
Over time, the ability to re-contact each customer
is extremely valuable. I, for one, am willing to
forego profits today for the ability to
exponentially profit in the future.
As long as you keep close track of your
Pay-Per-Click campaigns and continually make small
"tweaks" to improve its’ performance, you'll be
pleased with your return on investment.
